About Meals on Wheels Liverpool

For over 60 years, Meals on Wheels Liverpool has been a trusted name in community care
Delivering not just meals, but dignity, independence, and human connection. What began in 1964 as a small group of volunteers helping local seniors has grown into a vital community service supporting older Australians, people with disabilities, and those recovering from illness or injury.
We are proud to continue our tradition of compassion and care—ensuring no one in our community feels hungry, isolated, or forgotten.

Our History
1964Humble Beginnings
Meals on Wheels Liverpool began in 1964, when Gus and Judy Wych, assisted by Mrs Flo Hanna, prepared and delivered the first two meals from their own home. These meals were wrapped in a blanket to keep them warm—a simple yet heartfelt act that laid the foundation for the organisation's future.October 1964Official Formation
Following a motion by Alderman Wych, Mayor Ernie Smith called a public meeting to discuss the formation of a Meals on Wheels service. With 20 attendees present, a motion was carried to establish the organisation within one month. A committee of 10 was elected, with Alderman Wych appointed as Chairman.November 1964First Meals Delivered
Soon after, the St. Luke’s Church Committee agreed to allow the use of their Church Hall for meal preparation. By the week of 10 November 1964, the first meals were officially cooked and delivered by a dedicated group of volunteers, marking the beginning of ongoing service to the Liverpool community.December 1966First Premises Secured
As the service expanded, it moved into new premises on Bigge Street—previously the site of Dewsbury’s Horse Stables. This marked the organisation’s first transition from temporary kitchen space to a more stable base of operations.December 1974Council Support Grows
Recognising the growing importance of the service, Liverpool Council allocated additional space at the rear of the Senior Citizen’s Centre, allowing the team to continue scaling their operations and reach more clients.1977–1988 New Facility Constructed
In 1977, the committee began advocating for a purpose-built facility to better support growing community needs. Their efforts were successful: $120,000 was allocated in the 1986–87 financial year for construction. In 1988, the brand-new building was officially opened by Mayor Casey Conway, offering a dedicated, well-equipped hub for the organisation.1993Meeting Room Added
To further enhance the facility, Liverpool Council added a meeting room in 1993, completing the current structure that continues to house Meals on Wheels Liverpool today.201551 Years of Service Celebrated
